Before you start
- WordPress 5.6 or later, running on https.
- A WordPress user with administrator rights.
Step 1: download the plugin
- In Metrara, go to Manage, choose your business and open Access keys.
- In the WordPress and WooCommerce block, click Download the plugin here.
Step 2: install the plugin in WordPress
- In WordPress, go to Plugins, Add New Plugin, Upload Plugin.
- Choose the file metrara-connector.zip and click Install Now.
- Click Activate Plugin.
Install it as a normal plugin. The plugin then updates itself: new versions appear under Plugins with Update now.
Step 3: create a pairing code
- Back in Metrara, in the WordPress and WooCommerce block, click Create pairing code.
- Click copy.
The code is single use and valid for 30 minutes. Creating a new code replaces the old one.
Step 4: connect
- In WordPress, go to Settings, Metrara.
- Paste the code in Pairing code.
- Click Connect to Metrara.
- You see: Connected. Metrara has received the keys; there is nothing else you need to do.
In Metrara, the block now shows Connected through the plugin with the date and version.
What the plugin does
- Creates an application password for Metrara, so Metrara can read your pages and posts.
- If WooCommerce is installed, creates read-only WooCommerce keys. See WooCommerce.
- Measures AI traffic: visits from AI crawlers and clicks from AI assistants, shown under SEO, AI, AI traffic.
- Reads the focus keyword from Yoast SEO, Rank Math or All in One SEO for the keyword check.
Step 5: check your cache plugin
A cache plugin can serve pages without letting the plugin measure AI crawlers.
WP Rocket: nothing to do. The plugin excludes the AI crawlers itself.
LiteSpeed Cache:
- Go to LiteSpeed Cache, Cache.
- Open the tab [4] Excludes.
- Find Do Not Cache User Agents. This is a different field from the list of mobile user agents.
- Paste this list, one per line, and click Save Changes:
GPTBot
OAI-SearchBot
ChatGPT-User
PerplexityBot
Perplexity-User
Google-Extended
Bytespider
CCBot
Amazonbot
Applebot-Extended
Meta-ExternalAgent
FacebookBot
cohere-ai
YouBot
DuckAssistBot
Diffbot
Other cache plugins (W3 Total Cache, WP Super Cache, WP-Optimize, Cache Enabler): look for the setting to exclude user agents from the cache and paste the same list. Also make sure paths with /wp-json/ are not cached.
When do I see data?
AI traffic is measured from the moment you install the plugin; it can't look back. Expect a few days to a week before the first visits show up.
Troubleshooting
- "Enter a valid pairing code." Copy the full code, including MTR-.
- "Connecting failed." The code may have expired or been used. Create a new code in Metrara and try again.
- Uploading the zip is blocked by your hosting firewall. Upload the plugin folder to wp-content/plugins/metrara-connector/ with FTP or your host's file manager, then activate it under Plugins.
